Stairway

So, I’m in History of Rock, and tomorrow is the final. Today, we are talking about Led Zeppelin, listening to Stairway to Heaven. This song takes me pretty far back to my childhood, reminds me of the first time I heard it, I was playing with Lego’s under the ping-pong table in my basementat probably age 9. I couldn’t do anything other than sit there and listen. I was in some sort of trance, bound by Plant’s high register rock vocals.

Another memory that comes up is driving in Andy Holliday’s mom’s car with Andy and his parents. Stairway came on the radio, and Andy’s dad went to change the station halfway through, and his mom freaked out and said, “You can’t turn off Stairway to Heaven in the middle! That’s sacrelidge!”

Mostly, it reminds me of middle school dances, where it was usually the final song played. I remember not ever having enough courage to ask girls to dance, so I sat around and enjoyed the music, hoping that somebody (anybody) would come ask me to dance.

Now, I don’t have to worry about that. Every day, I realize how lucky I am to be with Emma. I’ve never felt so content or natural around anyone in my entire life. I love her.

Oh yeah! I forgot! In the number one spot for my little Top 5 list? MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.” Obv. I’m pretty sure if you entered my house (oh my gosh, I miss Benny Street) at all during the months of April or May and encountered me fucked up on some substance (which I’m pretty sure all of you did, probably numerous times, because I spent the last month of my college career fairly fucked up), I inevitably was like “Wanna see something AWESOME!?” and you were probably like “…again?”

I remember the exact occasion when Kaitlin told me that I HAD to see this video. It was glorious.

Since the majority of the people who might see this are still in college, I’m going to say this:

Get a job before you get out of college. Or prepare an excellent back up story. Because every. Fucking. Person. You will ever encounter post-graduation will immediately ask you the following things: 1. What your major was (legit) and 2. What you’re doing now (also legit, but annoying if you’re not doing anything).

And that’s where it should stop. But kids, if you are a graduate of an accredited university and you don’t have a job and completely miserable about it, it will NEVER end here. It will continue, with questions like, “Oh yeah, did you ever think about ______ or ______?”

Oh, really? REALLY? Have I ever thought about jobs that may or may not relate directly to my major? Have I? I mean, it’s not like it’s what I think about every fucking minute of every fucking day. For you, this is just something fun to think about for thirty seconds when you talk to me, but I live my fucking life and have to deal with this all the fucking time. I have thought about literally every fucking occupation you can imagine, buddy. You are not helping anything—if you want to help me, make me laugh, and if you can’t do that, at least fucking look at me and pay attention when you see the misery/hopelessness/tears welling up in my eyes when you’re talking to me about my life, and fucking stop it. Seriously.

Economic downturns affect my chances of getting the jobs that I want in theater. A lot. I’m scared. The first thing that goes when people have to cut back on leisure spending is the arts. Theater is one of the most expensive arts to frequent. No ticket sales = fewer shows to work on = fewer jobs. Eeeek.

American Princes - “Watch As They Go”

After forming in Brooklyn in 2002, American Princes is now based out of Little Rock, Arkansas. I dig this song because (surprise surprise) it’s really catchy. This track can be found on their latest release, Other People which came out this past April on Yep Roc Records.

The American Princes have shared the stage with The Roots, The Flaming Lips, Mudhoney, the Hold Steady and Spoon, and they’re currently working on their follow up to Other People. Check out what NPR has to say about them, and let us know what you think in the comments.

I had heard these guys somewhere else, but I forgot about them. I like this song.
